Gloucestershire County Council has confirmed that the Wallbridge road in Stroud will remain closed following feedback from the public.
Gloucestershire County Council consulted with Stroud residents in February to decide whether the temporary Wallbridge road should be opened permanently.
The road was built as a temporary route through Stroud while the Merrywalks Bridge work was completed.
During this work, many people found the diversion was working so well they requested it remain open after the scheme was finished.
Gloucestershire County Council put two options out for public consultation, these were: 1. To open Wallbridge to traffic on one lane only (outbound) with the other lane replaced with a shared use cycletrack and footway.
2. To keep it closed and explore the possibility of creating a public open space in the future.
Over 300 people had their say during the consultation process and the results show that most people were in favour of option 2 and the route will be closed for now.
Lawrence Elcocks, Network and Traffic Manager, said: “We are pleased that so many people had their say on the future of Wallbridge in Stroud.
“The road will remain closed for now, and a decision will be made on whether this is a permanent solution or not in the future.”
