AN ELDERLY man who withdrew cash from a building society fell victim to a gang of thieves in broad daylight as he attempted to pay the money into his Post Office account.
The incident occured in Gloucester city centre between 10.45am and 11.25am on Wednesday, August 29, as the 86-year-old local man withdrew some cash from a building society in Westgate Street.
He had the money in an envelope within a plastic bag, which he then carried up Eastgate Street, through Kings Walk ,into Kings Square and into the Post Office in the Oxebode.
He is believed to have been followed on this short journey by four people - two men and two women separated into couples.
Once inside the post office, it is believed one of the women cut open the man's bag, allowing the money to fall out and they made off with it.
The man only realised what had happened when coming to pay the money into his Post Office account.
Officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anyone suspicious in the city centre on Wednesday morning, particularly along the gate streets and in the Oxebode.
The offenders are believed to have been of Eastern European appearance, well dressed and very well organised.
Anyone who can help officers with their investigation should ring police on 101 quoting incident number 152 of August 29. A reward of up to £1,000 may be paid for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
