CHILDREN at Sheepscombe Primary School have been busy focusing on the 'core' subjects of late.

On Tuesday, October 2, pupils at the school took part in a specially themed apple day, which involved lots of fun and educational activities.

In the morning, students learned how to make apple juice using an apple press, recently purchased with a grant from the national Let's Get Cooking scheme.

And later on in the day they made a variety of snacks and cakes using a number of apples from the school's very own orchard.

As well as having a go at some traditional apple bobbing, the children also enjoyed a game of apple handball, which saw opposing teams passing the fruit around in an effort to pip victory.

Poor weather had impacted on the school's own harvest but parents and villagers kindly helped out by donating a number of apples to compensate for the shortfall.

"We want to say a big thank you to everyone who supplied apples, including Primrose Vale Farm Shop in Brockworth, which kindly donated a big box of apples," said headteacher Paul Lailey.

"It was a fantastic day which brought the whole school and village together."
