AT a lunchtime event a Stroud man and member of The Rotary Club of Stroud has taken the ceremonial chain of district governor.

Martyn Harwood took over his duties on Sunday, June 29 at a celebratory lunch at Egypt Mill, Nailsworth. Martyn who lives in Bussage and has been a member of Rotary for 22 years is now overseeing 66 Rotary clubs with over 2,000 members ranging from Worcester in the north to south of Bristol and from Monmouth to Swindon.

Commenting on his elevation to district governor Martyn said, "I'm very proud to take up the position and look forward to the year ahead, especially to have the opportunity to see the good work that local Rotary clubs achieve in their communities, as well as nationally and internationally. I've got a great team with me, especially my wife Jill and I know it will be a great and enjoyable year.”

Martyn has been a key member of the Rotary Club of Stroud and has helped in their annual Ebley fireworks display and many other annual events.

He will be in post for 12 months supporting and helping the clubs in the district with their local and international work for communities.

Rotary International is one of the world’s largest service organisations with 1.2 million members worldwide.

It actions projects working with organisations like The Trussel Trust who operate Foodbanks throughout the UK and ShelterBox the suppliers of emergency shelter and aid for disasters worldwide.
