THE Latest Stroud Probus meeting saw a welcome return of Dr Timothy Brain, formerly Gloucestershire's Chief Constable.

On this occasion his subject was the role of the 2nd Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment in 1944-5.

He began by explaining his personal interest in this subject because of a family connection.

While the 1st Battalion was engaged in the Far East conflict and 2nd Battalion were fighting in Europe but due to overwhelming odds the Dunkirk evacuation took place.

The Gloucesters were ordered to fight as the rear guard and suffered severe losses with survivors taken prisoner.

As a result the battalion was reformed and his uncle Gilbert, who had been working in the Bristol aircraft industry, was called up for military service.

We were given a vivid account of the training which they underwent in readiness for the Normandy landings on June 6, 1944.

Gilbert was promoted sergeant and commanded a Bren Gun Carrier.

Through a series of illustrations, the role the Gloucesters played in the liberation of Europe was quite apparent and as a result of action taken by Gilbert in one particular battle he was awarded the Military Medal.

Fortunately he had kept a record of his service and it was from this that Dr Brain was able to do his research.

This was a most interesting presentation and Keith Walker thanked him on behalf of members.

In reply he expressed thanks for the speaker's fee which will be donated to the Meningitis Trust.

Probus meet at the Cotswold Indoor Bowling Centre, Dudbridge, Stroud at 10.15am on the second and fourth Wednesday each month and is open to all retired men.

Ample free parking is available.
