SEVERAL members recently travelled to Torquay, joining hundreds of wine and beer makers from around the country who were there to compete in the Wales and West Wine Federation annual competitions.

This was an extra special year as the foundation was celebrating it's 50th anniversary. Stroud, as usual, acquitted themselves well, winning both the Circle Challenge Cup and the Wales and West Federation Circle Championship trophy.

Everyone from Stroud contributed to the overall scores, however some members came first in their class. Brenda Marlow won three firsts, making her the lady with the most points.

Gillian Gay and Fred Gilpin had two first places with Christine Philp taking one first place, which together with placings saw her win the Novice of the Year award.

Considering the number of competitors it is no mean feat to be placed in the first six.

The whole weekend was a resounding success with good weather and a first class hotel, and of course a whole load of trophies to show for the effort made.

At our monthly meeting John Coleman provided us with an amusing and head scratching quiz.

There were two competitions and the Red After Dinner Sweet class saw Fred Gilpin taking top spot with Stan Gudge second and Dave Marlow third.

Dave Raymond won the Brown Ale class.

The judge for the evening was John House from The Reddings and he was thanked by chairperson Valerie Fussell.

To all wine makers out there, why not enter your products in Stroud Show on Saturday, July 19, or if you are interested in becoming a member of the Wine Circle speak to someone manning the stand.

Our primary objective is wine making, however we do have numerous social events in conjunction with other Wine Circles.
