DEREK Newman of Newman Fine Art from the Cotswolds will exhibit for sale some of his personal collection of Gloucestershire views at the forthcoming Cotswolds Decorative Antiques & Fine Art Fair, August15-17, at Westonbirt School, Westonbirt, near Tetbury, Gloucestershire.

Principle amongst these is a superb oil on canvas of nearby Painswick Church by Charles March Gere RA RWS 1869-1957 depicting the churchyard with its famous ’99 yew trees’ and children and their pony playing in the foreground.

Gere was born in Gloucester and was a member of the Birmingham Group of Painters and Craftsmen and was a scholarship student at Birmingham School of Art where he later taught, before moving back to live in Painswick in 1904 in significant contrast to industrial Birmingham.

Gere’s sister Margaret 1878-1965 who was taught by Charles and was a fellow member of the Birmingham Group is represented by a deft watercolour, also of figures in Painswick churchyard and a further sister Edith 1875-1959, who married the artist Henry Payne and lived close to Stroud at Amberley and painted naturalistic floral watercolours is included with her delicate ‘Flowers of the Common’ These two sisters were well known in artistic circles as ‘The masterful Miss Geres’

A further important artist of the Birmingham School, Arthur Joseph Gaskin ARE 1862-1928 is shown with his woodcut of ‘Chipping Campden’, which was exhibited in a major retrospective exhibition of the artist’s work at Birmingham City Art Gallery in 1982.

Other Gloucestershire subjects include the evocative ‘Old blue Gloucester Wagon’ 1947 by Ernest Michael Dinkel 1894-1983 who taught at both Stourbridge and Edinburgh Art Schools before retiring to Stroud in Gloucestershire.

Continuing the theme of ‘pictures from private collections’ rare oils by Albert Goodwin RWS 1845-1932 who was more usually associated with watercolour will be exhibited of Antibes and Naples as well as watercolours of closer to home, Clovelly and Rye.
