THE A48 in the Forest of Dean is next for improvement as Gloucestershire County Council continues its summer resurfacing programme.

Highway crews are taking advantage of the sunshine as more road resurfacing takes place across the county.

On Monday, August 11 work on the new hard wearing road surface for the A48 between Blakeney and Lensbrook will start, and is expected to finish Friday, August 15.

Due to the road width, the type of work being done and to ensure the safety of the travelling public and the workforce, it will be necessary to close the road to traffic.

The 1km strength of road between the Viney Hill turning in Blakeney and Purlieu End Farm at Lensbrook will be closed to all traffic between 7.30am and 4.30pm.

It will be fully open at all other times.

Due to the road closure, a diversion will be sign posted directing traffic through Whitecroft, Cinderford and Littledean.

Residents along the stretch of road will still be able to access their homes and businesses.

Stagecoach will also be providing a shuttle bus service from Blakeney to Elton Corner.

The new surface will be made up of 900 tonnes of the best quality hot rolled asphalt with chippings.

Access will be maintained for emergency vehicles.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways said, “As our priority road repair programme for 2014 continues, this vital work will significantly improve this well-used road.

"We're extremely grateful for the patience residents have shown us as we carry out improvements like this around the county. I am sure the benefits will far outweigh the inconvenience caused.”
