GUEST speaker Mr George Yiend and his wife Frances were very prompt in their arrival to our September meeting, so it was delightful that Frances could accompany our singing of ‘Jerusalem’ by playing her electric piano.

Unfortunately there were quite a number of apologies for absence from Georgie Hall, Dorothy Isles, Pat Hughes, Linda Woodward, Joyce Hart and Hazel White.

Sadly some members were poorly and one has had a hip replacement recently, so we hope they will feel better soon.

We thanked Val Dalby for her lovely table flowers of sweet smelling yellow roses and it was announced that longstanding member Margaret Adams and her husband William are soon to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary, so many congratulations go to them in their special year.

Some correspondence was discussed, including quite a number of walks and activities that could be undertaken if members so wished.

We concluded the business with the Treasurer’s report and then settled back to enjoy a lovely evening’s entertainment of ‘Cider with Rosie’ with Mr Yiend reciting an account of the early life of Laurie Lee in four sections.

He started with Laurie’s very early life in the Slad Valley, continued with his school days and especially the very funny anecdotes of his memories of the annual church teas and concluded with Christmas and carol singing around the village.

His wife accompanied him on piano and many well remembered tunes were played.

Everyone said what a lovely evening it was.

We followed, as usual, with refreshments, the drawing of the raffle and the monthly competition for A display of home grown produce was judged as:-

First:- Margaret Adams

Second:- Pam Elliott

Third:- Mary Jarrett

If you were unable to join us on this occasion, hopefully you can visit us at 7.15pm on Tuesday, October 7 in St. Matthew’s Church Hall, Cainscross, when Mrs Mo Smith, the ‘Lazy Cook’, will entertain us with her talk ‘Ignorance is Bliss’.

The monthly competition will be for a display of Autumn Flowers.

Visitors and new members are always welcome and there is always a raffle, sales table and a cup of tea to be had.
