FOR the meeting on October 22 the Stroud Valleys Music Club were well entertained by Christopher Morley with his Confessions of a Music Critic based on his long experience as Music Critic of the Birmingham Post.
From the early days of phoning in his 'copy' just minutes after the end of a concert to meet the deadline, to the modern use of electronics, he had plenty of scope for amusing stories.
At the same time he was hugely grateful for actually being paid to go to some wonderful concerts, and then to meet many great conductors, orchestras and performers.
In between the tales of a musical life he played a broad selection of music that illustrated them.
Thus we heard music by Mozart, Verdi, Leonard Bernstein, Mahler, Michael Tippett, Max Reger, Grieg (played by himself), and several others.
The Music Club meets at 7.30pm on the second and fourth Wednesday evenings at St Josephs Church Hall, Oldends Lane, Stonehouse and welcomes visitors and new members.
The next meeting on November 12 has the theme of Music & the Romance of Place - a journey led by Chris Baldwin.
