AT THEIR November meeting, the luncheon club enjoyed a talk by Fiona Warin, on 'Land Girls' during World War II.

She described recruitment and how girls from very different backgrounds were interviewed and placed in various aspects of farming and timber work.

For most girls it was long hours, very hard work and at first little or no social life.

Their job was vital, as they were needed to increase food production, as most imports were stopped after 1939, and only a few ships got through.

The land girls increased massively, but it was not until long after the war was over that they were recognised for the part they played.

Fiona was thanked by Daphne Hogarth.
