THERE’S more to event catering than sausage rolls and sandwiches, as Year 10 catering students at Tetbury’s Sir William Romney’s School have discovered in the past three months.
They have created upmarket hospitality food for a wide variety of outside catering events, including open days, careers fairs and a Tetbury Chamber of Commerce meeting.
These budding master chefs have also cooked up a storm for three local retirement homes.
“This has been an opportunity for our students to see how to cater for ‘real’ events as well as forge links with the local community,” says SWR’s catering teacher Clare Jones.
“This interaction adds social skills to their curriculum.”
She adds: “I knew they were good, but these events have proven just how high a standard of skills they have achieved, catering for all tastes – from a la carte lunches to finger buffets and upmarket platters.
“We’ve taken them out of the classroom into a ‘real world’ environment. The students didn’t think they could do it and were overwhelmed by the positive feedback they received,” she concludes.
