IT WAS more than double the pleasure at the Music Club’s recent meeting when retired Minister, Vernon Godden, told us about how music has given an added resonance to his life.

He plays the double bass in two local orchestras and he brought with him not just his instrument but also his orchestral colleague, Gordon Bayley.

Gordon was formerly a double bassist with the Philharmonia Orchestra and now makes bows and repairs instruments.

Working as a duo Vernon and Gordon told us about the role of music – and double basses – in their life.

Anecdotes were interspersed with music featuring the double bass, but a highlight of the evening was when Gordon gave a live performance of ‘The Elephant’ by Saint-Saens, using the valuable bow he had made for himself.

Members and visitors agreed it was a memorable evening, and were looking forward to another interactive presentation on April 8 when music teacher John Crockford will take us through the development of the piano and its keyboard relatives.
