THE monthly meeting of the Stonehouse Women`s Royal British Legion took place at the Community Centre on Thursday, March 26.

The chairman Janet Walsh led the exhortation and silent tribute.

There were 27 members present.

Our speaker was Jim Turpy.

He gave us a very interesting talk on his travels in Nepal.

He went on a trekking trail at the base of Mount Everest.

These trails are very very busy.

He flew to Kathmandu which is the capital of Nepal.

It is a mountainous country in the Himalayas and includes mount Everest.

Kathmandu is a very crowded city with a population of overone1 million.

Nepal itself is a very agricultural country where the people work hard and it is very clean.

Jim visited Hindu and Buddhist holy temples and showed us pictures of these and the prayer flags fluttering in the winds - as the prayers go up to heaven.

Buddhists and Hindus mix well and they attend each others services.

Sir Edmund Hilary is revered there.

His efforts have resulted in the building of schools and medical centres.

The English language is spoken as it helps commerce.

We were also shown many scenic pictures and pictures of shrines, prayer wheels, and monasteries.

Jim was thanked for his talk.

The winner of the competition for a mountain picture was won by Dolores Merrett.

Our next meeting will be held at the Community Centre on April 30 when the speaker will be June Dolphin.

Her talk will be entitled “To Russia with love”, and the competition will be for a favourite small soft toy. Future dates include a Coffee Morning on Wednesday, April 15, 9.30- 12am at the Community Centre.

There will also be a service at Leighterton on Anzac Day Saturday, April 26 when the Australians and New Zealanders who lost their lives at Leighterton in World War I will be remembered.
