IN THE last of the current series of films and discussions covering all aspects of Climate Change, Transition Stroud hosted a workshop on Sunday, April 26, at the Lansdown Hall when 32 concerned Stroud citizens were invited to rethink the future based on the “Zero Carbon Britain” report produced by CAT, the Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth in central Wales.

Two short films produced by the enthusiastic team from CAT were followed by questions and workshop discussions allowing ideas, thoughts, worries, and hopes to be aired and shared.

Several people pointed out technological improvements that could make the ZCB scenario if anything easier to bring about.

At the end of the evening, while there was enthusiasm for the viability of the plan and general consensus that a future society based on net zero greenhouse gas emissions was essential and could be better than today, some had reservations about some of the implications, such as more wind turbines, less pasture, fewer flights and a more controlled economy.

Jon Barrance, who hosted the evening said, “The message is clear, we can avoid disastrous climate change – we have the technology to power ourselves with 100 per cent renewable energy, to feed ourselves sustainably and to leave a safe and habitable climate for our children and future generations. We can embrace the change.”
