Stonehouse WI

THE meeting opened with Lynne welcoming everybody, apologies received, minutes read and approved.

Pam and Veronica had attended the Campaign & Debate day at Maisemore and Pam gave us a comprehensive account of their visit in regard to this year’s Resolution.

Members were then asked to vote on this resolution at the meeting.

Veronica gave us an account of her visit to Denman College where she heard an excellent tutor give a talk on the poets Philip Larkin and John Betjeman and would highly recommend.

Our annual cake stall on the Green in Stonehouse High Street was again a profitable fund raiser and thanks were extended to all members who had contributed and helped on the day.

Although we lost our main cake producer Lyndsey who has moved away, we still managed to step up to the mark.

Lynne had heard from Lyndsey and she has settled in well in her new home in Gosport and had already been to a WI meeting there.

News of another member who moved earlier this year was relayed by email to Marlene, she too has settled in well in her new home in Fleet, enjoying making new friends at her local WI and also spending time with her new granddaughter.

Marlene also told us that Joy is now back home recovering after a major operation and we all wish her well and a speedy recovery.

After the business was concluded we then handed the meeting over to John Green and members from Gloucester Film Makers who had very kindly stood in after our original speaker was unable to attend.

We were shown a selection of small films made by members including a WI Centenary film,

‘Roaming in Rome’ and various films showing magnificent scenery of the Austrian Alps.

The club was formed in 1962 and was then called Gloucester Cine Club, in the 90s it became Gloucester Cine and Video Club and then again it changed its name in 2010 to Gloucester Film Makers emphasising the fact they make films rather than just watching those made by film and TV companies.

The films were very professional and very entertaining to watch.

We also took part in a quiz devised by them on locations and artefacts of Gloucestershire, of which Carolyn and Greta were the most knowledgeable and won a box of chocolates.

A vote of thanks was given by Greta after a most enjoyable evening.

Our next meeting is a Member’s Evening (Treasure Hunt) on June 17 at 7.30pm at Stonehouse Community Centre and visitors will be most welcome to join us.
