AT OUR April meeting Steffi Stern of “Mother Goose” in Nailsworth gave us a lesson in needle felting.

From the pieces of unspun wool and with the special needles she provided she showed us how to make felt and shape it into delightful roses.

It was quite absorbing seeing the transformation and as well as the pleasure of creating something attractive the process was relaxing group therapy under Steffi calm and patient guidance

In May we had a serious discussion on the resolution regarding the health and personal care given to elderly people in their homes on leaving hospital which is to be debated at the NFWI’s Annual General Meeting on the June 4.

A considerable number of members had seen the problems caused to elderly relatives, friends or neighbours by the present system of determining what is nursing care and what is personal care, the first provided by the NHS and the second by Councils.

The majority thought that care should be decided by one body but gave our delegate to the AGM discretion to decide her vote after hearing the debate.

After the discussion we had a very lively and interesting talk by Celia Hardgrave on “Being a Magistrate”.

She went through the qualities required in a magistrate, how one is chosen and the types of problems that came under their jurisdiction and what penalties they could impose.

She gave a brief history of how the role had developed from medieval times when knights were required by their sovereign to help keep the peace.

On June 8 we are having an evening of boules and a picnic on KG5 playing fields with guidance from Mike Harvey and on July 13 Melissa Ravenhill is talking about “Woefuldane Dairy”.
