Whitminster Garden Competition

THE green fingered of Whitminster gathered together on July 16, for their first ever garden competition awards evening. The garden competition was a huge success, thanks to all who participated.

Judging took place over three evenings in early July by judges from the Guild of Judges (Gloucestershire Federation of Gardening Societies) and Highfield Garden World.

Participants enjoyed the opportunity to see a photographic display of all the entries during the evening, thanks to our local volunteer photographer who accompanied the judges.

Winners:

Best Front garden was won by M McCrea, second place went to C Bennett

Best Rear garden was won by A Heaven, second place went to K Laker and R Hale was Highly Commended

Best Wildlife garden was won by H McGill, second place went to D Hamlett

Best Container was won by J Healey, second place went to S Turl

Under 18s was won by H Turl and medals were presented to all of the children who took part.

Best overall garden was awarded to A Heaven.

The awards evening ended with an inspirational talk about attracting wildlife to your garden, presented by Martin McGill, ornithologist and conservation warden.

The competition was sponsored by Whitminster Parish Council, Mr and Mrs J Jones, and local businesses: Attwoolls, Highfield Garden World, Whitminster Inn and Whitminster Stores. Sponsorship included: funding, prizes, the awards and perpetual cup.

Participants enjoyed taking part and said the competition was “fun”, “a lovely village event” and created a “sense of pride and community spirit”.

It has encouraged a wider interest in gardening within the village across all age groups and we hope the competition becomes an annual event.

Grateful thanks to everyone who supported the competition.

Photos of all the gardens which were entered in the competition are currently on display at Highfield Garden World (restaurant).
