Upton St Leonard's WI - August

OUR August treat was speaker Paul Evans reciting poems on 'Farming and village life', from the sublime to the ridiculous, Paul had us laughing and reminiscing on local events, families and friends, grandchildren to Aunt Mabel, his plausible tongue reminded us of childhood, through school years into our adult stage in life.

He surprised us from every angle, from Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood, to quoting a verse to his 11 year old granddaughter and the eight year old asking 'What is a grandmother?'

Some thoughts were; she walks, goes fishing, old and fat!, wears spectacles, but nevermind she is the one who has the time on her hands, to listen and help especially with small children.

Trouble at the bank with a 98 year old lady, had us doubled up with laughter; as her cheques bounced, pension, pin numbers, buttons to press, complaints, facing a long queue, no smile - no cash, we have all been there, forget it, as frustration sets in.

I wonder if the banks are there to help us?

Moving into unrequited love between Ethel, Basil and Steve at the scrapyard, there was no end to these comic occurrences.

The local bragger, drinker, the weatherman, too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry, the elderly gent, 'WEN' all found a place in Paul's poetry and prose, he ended with a Pam Ayres, 'I wish I'd looked after my teeth and looked at the cavities beneath', enough said, a very warm round of applause followed by a vote of thanks from Meg James ended a very fun evening.

Business was brief; Upton St Leonard's 60th Annual Flower Show on Saturday, September 12, 2015, 2-4.30pm members class XA1, a pencil case in any medium.

Jill, Pam and Judy through to the second round of the quiz.
