Upton St Leonard's WI

CELEBRATORY, celebrations for the NFWI Centenary on Wednesday, September 16, were suitably aired and choired by local Radio Gloucestershire presenter Mark Cummings.

Mark, sporting a beard, entertained and delighted us at Upton WI, saying his early 6am-9am radio show gives the listeners up to date information along with the mechanics, ground work, unusual phone-ins added to his vast local knowledge something to interest and amuse everyone.

Although a Yorkshire man, his love is for the Gloucestershire countryside amid the setting of the beautiful Cotswold stone villages, hamlets, towns and the city itself.

We found out that the M5 motorway at Junction 13 to Junction 12 follows the same path as the Moreton Valance runway used to test the jet engine made at GAC Brockworth.

Originally of course, the main road from Gloucester to Bristol was the A38, used by many to visit Slimbridge Wildfowl Trust or onto Bristol Zoo and surrounding area.

Recording recently from the new motorway service station near Matson, Mark on the Southern route and Jack on the northern route interviewed many visitors extolling local places of interest along with the River Severn Nore, Painswick Clypping, Woolsack races, the madness of chasing a Double Gloucester cheese down Cooper's Hill, views from May Hill, all unique to the Cotswolds, our own Gloucester Cathedral, hoping to entice these visitors to come back and spend some more time with us.

The love of the five valleys near Stroud, Mark's may long haul cycle rides with anecdotes along the way, Cotswold poets, Jilly Cooper, 'Cider with Rosie' author Laurie Lee from the Slad Valley all make up a tapestry of our historical landscape situated on the edge of the limestone escarpment of the Cotswold hills; this is what Mark and all of us love, a warm round of applause followed by a vote of thanks from Marlene on a fine evenings entertaining talk.

Business was brief as Lynne welcomed Jean Stoneman from Oxmoor, Janice Priday from Abbeymead and Lynn from Painswick Road, we hope to see these ladies again.

Tuesday, September 22, 10am, depart village hall for trip to 'Open Treasures', Bristol, Lampshade making 1-4pm, Thursday, October 1, items for Shoe Boxes.

Birthdays, Marilyn and Diane, the latter's daughter iced a beautiful celebration cake with WI motif, cut by our longest serving member Mrs Evelyn Rumsey, who incidentally won the WI class at Upton 'Flower Show' of a yellow hand knitted pencil case and other knitting classes, well done Evelyn.

We meet again on Monday, October 5, 7.30pm in Upton St Leonard's Village Hall for a talk on 'Gardening for Wildlife', speaker Helen Mugridge.

Colour orange.

All ladies are very welcome.
