Stroud and District Philatelic Society

OUR latest meeting gave members an opportunity to display items beginning with the letters R and S.

John Lorrain started with items from his Devon collection representing Sidmouth and South Devon.

Followed by Tim Kestin with stamps from the State Settlements, Rhodesia, Russia and Sierra Leone.

John Orrallo followed with a beautifully written up display of South African stamps.

Peter Adam brought the first half of the evening to a close with items from Seychelles which included stamps from The British Indian Ocean Territories which has a population of less than a dozen yet has issued nearly 400 different stamps since 1980.

Chairman John Armitage began the second half with stamps from Rhodesia and St Helena and a very interesting cover posted from South Georgia a dependency of the Falkland Islands to Tristan da Cunha, a remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Our next meeting is on November 4, when visiting speaker Bryan Jones will show stamps from the popular George VI period.

The meeting starts at 7.30pm in St.Joseph’s Catholic Church Hall, Oldends Lane, Stonehouse.

Austim Mears also showed items from Tristan da Cunha gathered when he visited the Island some years ago.

Ray Adlam concluded a most enjoyable evening with items which include postmarks from sixty of the one hundred and eleven post offices operating during the reign of George VI.

Our next meeting is on November 4, when visiting speaker Bryan Jones will entertain us with the stamps of George VI.
