Hilltop Gardening Club: Speaker Philip Aubrey gives a talk on 'Garden Ponds'

OUR imaginations were stretched on a damp, foggy November night as we tried to picture ourselves on a balmy summer evening enjoying a drink outside in our garden accompanied by the trickling of water from our water feature.

Philip Aubrey gave us a very interesting and informative illustrated talk on ‘Garden Ponds’ from the hard work digging a large, deep pond suitable for fish to a small shallow one using a pre-formed liner.

He recommended using baskets for planting into the pond and suggested suitable and unsuitable plants.

While about three quarters of our members had a pond which it was recommended to be in full sun, others had a water feature which could be anywhere in the garden.

Even a barrel could help to bring water into the garden.

Philip brought along plants, both aquatic and perennial, for sale as well as cards from original watercolours by Liz Aubrey.

An enjoyable evening was had by all and we left looking forward to that balmy summer evening as we stepped out into the Eastcombe fog.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, December 1, when Club members will learn how to make Christmas decorations from willow and garden prunings.

Guests are welcome to any of our meetings, held between October and July, at Eastcombe Village Hall on the first Tuesday of the month.
