Launch Party for the Summer Street Giles Gilbert Scott K6 Phone Box Library and Bus Shelter
IT WAS an exciting day for Summer Street residents when they held the official Launch Party for the opening of their new Library & Bus Shelter.
The Library is housed in a Giles Gilbert Scott K6 Telephone Box which was purchased by Stroud Town Council for £1.
Local residents then set about re-painting and restoring it to its former glory, with the aid of a grant from Small Sparks funding.
Mr Steve Gaskell of No. 124 kindly prepared and repainted the box and Mr Keith Holmes of No. 120 fitted the five shelves.
Mrs Sarah Dixon of No.114 undertook the task of painting the gold Crown Emblem, as well as producing posters to advertise the event, Mary Jarrett of No. 129 carried out the secretarial work, Jenny Bailey masterminded the scheme and Cllr John Marjoram attended.
It falls to a small party of us to keep the Library clean and tidy.
The residents feel that this facility will be useful to provide a focus for the Street, since Summer Street’s only shop closed a few years ago.
The Library will hold paperback books with the lowest shelf being kept for children’s books.
The ribbon was officially cut at 11am on Saturday, December 12, by resident Mr Bassett of No. 16.
Mr Bassett, who is now 86 years old, has lived in the same house since he was seven years old and was keen to share stories of how things have changed in his lifetime.
We finished by enjoying some refreshments in the garden of Mrs Dixon.
