Leisure Leagues: Plenty of goals and no presents promised in league

Leisure Leagues – who run popular leagues in Stroud, has decided to forego the usual turkey, trees and presents in favour of tackles, points and goals, as more leagues than ever stay open throughout the festive period.

Leisure Leagues Ian Phillips explains the reason for the new stance: “When you boil it down, Christmas is about football. From the Boxing Day tradition of games, even down to the famous Christmas Truce game of World War One, football and Christmas in the UK are inextricably linked.

Not that Leisure Leagues is full of scrooges.

In previous years we have, as a company tried to get into the festive spirit, but this time we have decided that all people expect from us is a quality football league and that’s what will give them,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s Christmas, summer or spring, we will do our best to provide just that.”

Ian also said that, as far as possible, Leisure Leagues would try and ensure the leagues were unaffected by the festive period.

“We have worked hard with Inside Football where the leagues are held, to get as many games as possible on so that people don’t have to sit around the house being bored when they actually want to play.”

Profits from the competition are donated to charity.
