Frampton on Severn Sailing Club: 50th Anniversary

FRAMPTON on Severn Sailing Club celebrated the start of their 50th year with a race for the “True Grit” trophy on New Year’s Day.

Despite the chilly air, 19 sailing dingies in seven different classes were launched in challenging conditions for a race which took just over an hour.

The start was fiercely contested and there were a couple of capsizes during the race as the gusts caught out some sailors.

Mainly it was good hard racing throughout the fleet with tactics coming in to play when several boats were converging on the gybe mark.

The race was run on a handicap basis so the result was not obvious on the water.

After the elapsed race times were adjusted to take account of the different classes, the winner was declared as one of the club’s junior sailors, Hannah Callen (Ross on Wye), followed by the commodore Ian Cook (Standish), and in third place Paul Dix (Gloucester).

After the race, the competitors and their shore crews enjoyed mulled wine and homemade shortbread in the clubhouse.

This was the first of a series of events planned throughout the year to celebrate 50 years since the club was founded in 1966.
