Stroud Gardening Club: An alternative look at weeds with Roger Umpleby

MR ROGER Umpleby gave an extremely entertaining talk on a cold and frosty evening on January 20, which was titled 'An alternative look at weeds'.

He presented his subject well with photographs and explained the value of some of the weeds in our world today.

Some of the uses are for medicines, edible weeds, flavouring, dyes and fibres.

Others are also beneficial to other plants and animals, food for animals and ornamental, to name a few.

It was a much bigger subject than many of us expected, but very informative, and we will all think differently about weeds in our gardens in future.

At the end of the presentation, a vote of thanks was given by our Chairman Ken Gracie, and refreshments were served, followed by the raffle.

The next meeting is our Annual General Meeting which will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday, February 17, 2016, in the Bedford Street Congregational Church Rooms.

It is hoped that all members will be present, and is also open to any non-members who may wish to attend.
