Stonehouse Gardening Club: An outing to Pound Farm Garden Centre
WHAT a treat awaited the Stonehouse Gardening Club on their arrival at Pound Farm Garden Centre last Wednesday, June 1.
After a warm welcome they were led to a polytunnel with trays, pots and baskets stretching on either side.
But their eyes were glued to a table filled with a riot of colourful bedding plants and empty pots.
Carefully, Mr and Mrs Hyett, the owners, took club members through the process of choosing soil, suitable colour and plant shapes, planting up and watering pots.
They gave hints and small details, for example that a stunning white centre training lobelia is grown from cuttings imported from Germany.
They finished up with a royal themed strawberry pot.
The group were then encouraged to explore the other greenhouses, and ended up in the germination shed with a demonstration on how to sow a whole trayful of tiny seeds regularly in about four quick moves.
This was followed by entering the sauna atmosphere of the super-fast germination room.
The evening ended with delicious refreshments and a collection was taken for the Cots for Tots charity.
