Leonard Stanley WI: The Annual Ploughman's Lunch

THE July meeting is always our annual Ploughmans Lunch, therefore business was kept as brief as possible with Ann stepping into the role of President in the absence of Maureen – it was quite like old times.

Ann thanked everyone who had contributed in any way to the WI Teas in the village hall on Saturday when Leonard Stanley held their village fair.

She was pleased to report that we had made a profit of £213.62 and it was decided that out of this, we would give £70 towards the village hall refurbishment and £30 to the Village Fair Committee towards next year’s Fair.

We were reminded that there was a coffee morning this Saturday morning in the Social Club in aid of refurbishment of the village hall at 10.15am.

Croquet and tea at Jill’s on July 28, with a £1 entry going towards Denman College upkeep and afternoon tea at Whitminster Inn on July 19 or 26.

Maureen had requested small wrapped gifts and raffle prizes for the Macmillan coffee morning – date to be advised.

As there is no meeting in August, flowers were given out for this month’s birthdays and next and the following received very attractive posies – Sue King, Margaret Coulson, Monica, Yvonne and Margaret Mathews.

We then tucked into a delicious ploughman’s lunch, followed by meringue, strawberries and cream and our usual cup of tea.

Jill then entertained us by playing on her electric organ and us all singing ‘Cockles and Mussels’ ,’ My Bonnie’ and finishing up with a rousing ‘Old Macdonald had a farm’.

Before departing, we had a look at the many knitted and sewed items already made for inclusion in the Christmas Boxes for the under privileged children overseas.

Judging by the amount already in hand and still five months to go, we are on target to meet our objective of 50 boxes for this year.

Our next meeting will be on September 12, at 2.15pm in the village hall when we will hear about The Ancient Art of Dowsing.

There will also be a sale of home produced goods.

Why not come along and join us and make new friends – you will be made very welcome.
