Cainscross WI: 90th birthday celebration

CAINSCROSS WI held a really enjoyable party for their 90th birthday celebration on the first Tuesday of July.

Luckily most members were able to attend and we invited Will Mansell from Stroud Foodbank to collect 90 items of food and toiletries that members had collected as their contribution.

Some lovely red, white and blue table arrangements were made by Val Dalby and we were joined by five members of the Dance Group Baily’s Beads who entertained us for the evening.

We enjoyed a supper of jacket potatoes with coronation chicken or chilli sauce toppings and salads.

We had a good display of desserts, such as trifles, meringues and tiramisu and washed it all down with wine or soft drinks.

Literally the ’icing on the cake’ was a beautiful sponge cake, made by member Georgie Hall, which was decorated with the WI Logo in dark green and white.

It was almost a shame to cut it, but we asked longstanding member Margaret Adams to do the honours and the cake was delicious.

Baily’s Beads played for us during the evening with songs such as 'My Grandfather’s Clock’, 'I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts’ and many others, which had us singing along to them.

Their leader Keith played the acoustic guitar, two ladies played violins, whilst two other ladies played keyboards and an Irish instrument called the Bodhran.

Keith had also done his homework and told us a lot of facts about the year 1926 when Cainscross WI was started.

We all agreed it had been a lovely evening.

Our next meeting will take place, as usual in St Matthew’s Church Hall, Cainscross to start at 7.15pm, on Tuesday, August 2.

We have a Craft Evening planned with three different crafts that can be undertaken such as a knitted key ring or printed tea towel.

The monthly competition will be for a ’Display of Summer Flowers’.

All visitors or new members will be very welcome to join us on this or any other meeting and for more details call 01453 762812.
