Stroud Gardening Club: with Carl Sadler from Woodman's World to speak on the construction of the Garden Trug

Stroud Gardening Club held their October meeting, and Chairperson, Sharon Pellatt welcomed members and visitors, and introduced Carl Sadler from Woodman's World to speak on the construction of the Garden Trug.

Carl brought with him a ready made trug frame of early season sweet chestnut, although he explained that ash is also a suitable material.

As he prepared to ready the materials to continue the construction, Carl explained that there are only five craftsmen left in the country, and only two full time, of which he is one.

He also explained that he only uses copper nails for fixing.

The willow slats are of the same material used in cricket bats, and are soaked in hot water to increase pliability for ease of fitting.

The trug was completed during the evening, and after construction, it just needs to be dressed with linseed oil before use, and then once every five years.

Trugs are popular not only for use in the garden for carrying fruit, flowers, vegetables or weeds, but also provides an attractive container for flower arrangements or makes an unusual hanging basket.

The trug can also be used as a food hamper for Christmas, Easter or any other special occasion.

Woodman's World also does fencing and wattle hurdles, and also besoms (witches broom).

Carl's talk included anecdotes of work in creating stage props and equipment for many various productions.

Following the demonstration, various sizes of trug were available for purchase; Sharon then thanked Carl for a very interesting evening, and with appreciation shown from the audience.

This was followed by the raffle and refreshments with cakes made by Jan and Sharon.

Our November meeting welcomes John Clegg from Bonsai World, and is held at the Bedford Street Congregational Church Rooms, Bedford Street, Stroud on Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at 7.30pm.

All members and visitors are welcome.
