Eastcombe WI puts the icing on the cake

THE October meeting of Eastcombe WI was chaired by Glenys Sharpe.

The business of the group was dealt with, and members were reminded that the November meeting would see the Christmas Auction of ‘surprise’ Christmas gifts –so all members to remember to bring along a wrapped Christmas gift for the auction.

The next element of the evening consisted of a cake icing workshop, ably headed up by Carol Lambert, who was aided by a very talented cake decorator, Chris Jones, and our glamorous assistant, Dot Moon.

Cookies and cup cakes, icing bags, sugar paste, glitter, stencils and motif cutters were supplied along with instructions – and the fun began.

One would think that if instructions and materials were supplied – uniform plates of decorated goodies would result.

With creative juices in full flow there could be nothing so humdrum from the Eastcombe WI ladies.

The following hour consisted of anything from quiet corners of concentration to tables aquiver with uncontrollable laughter as nimble fingers, and not so nimble fingers wrestled with piping bags, flurried golden glitter about the hall, and forced the sugar paste to submit into some semblance of rosebuds and butterflies, or dandelions and dragonflies, or whatever the final object most closely resembled.

The delicious resulting masterpieces were carefully wrapped and transported home to impress partners, hubbies and grandchildren - smiles all round.
