Budding Stroud scientist to represent Westonbirt School at FameLab Academy

FOURTEEN-year-old Jasmine Hooke from Stroud won the final round of FameLab Academy at Westonbirt School this week and will be representing her classmates at EDF Barnwood in March.

FameLab Academy is an annual science communications competition for schools run by Cheltenham Festivals modelled on their international FameLab competition which is held as part of Cheltenham Science Festival. Contestants have just three minutes to convey a scientific concept of their choice to leading researchers, media personalities and science policy makers who judge the clarity and charisma of their presentation.

Jasmine spoke about the science behind dyslexia, a personal subject matter which Jasmine communicated with eloquence and passion; “Jasmine’s presentation was engaging and confident” said FameLab Academy judge Sharon Pearson, Education manager at Cheltenham Science Festival;

“She took her audience on a fascinating journey which was personal and packed with science.”

Jasmine’s performance not only won the chance to represent Westonbirt School at the Gloucestershire final, but also to spend two days with a science mentor and astrophysicist at the University of Gloucestershire and experience a prestigious STEM work placement.
