Nailsworth & District Flower Arrangement Society with Shirley Henderson - Around the World in 80 Days

SHIRLEY Henderson an area demonstrator from the Midlands was our flower arranger for the February meeting.

Shirley’s theme for the evening drew upon the book by Jules Verne entitled “Around the World in 80 Days” or in her own interpretation for the evening ,“80 minutes ish”.

Shirley shared her knowledge of the great journey made by Phileas Fogg and friends whilst carrying out her skilfully arranged flower arrangements.

For her first design Shirley used a top hat container filled with cream cala lilies and hellibors complimented by a walking cane, cleverly depicting the character of Phileas Fogg.

A suitcase filled with rosemary, salmon coloured lizianthus and lilies were” ready to go” and a hogarth curl of gold and orange roses around a clock gave the time.

A rattan chair with chico palms, fatsia leaves, green chrysanthemums, ginger, and red stocks completed the Indian scene.

A bamboo container of skimmia, lucadendrum and some stunning red and green anthiriums, a realistic impression of China, and a Wigwam styled arrangement of red white and blue brought the journey to a close in America.

There were a good number of entries for the competition “Red is the Colour” which was won by Rose Grant with Marion Charlwood second, and in third place was Janet Deane.

The Mary Barnard Cup was presented to Nancy Selwyn.

Please note that our next meeting on March 1, starts at 7pm with the AGM which will be followed by flower arranging by demonstrator Emily Broomhead.

New members and friends are always welcome to meetings at 7.30pm in Nailsworth Town Hall on the first Wednesday of the month.
