Cainscross WI: Mrs Pam Slater and her talk on the ‘Cotswold Perfumery’ at Bourton on the Water

MOST members were present for our February meeting, but there were apologies from Pam Elliott, Thelma Wheldon, Dot Brunning and Crystal Harrison.

Crystal has recently had knee surgery and we wish her a speedy recovery.

Val Dalby was thanked for her very pretty pink and white floral table decoration.

We commenced with the usual business of Secretary’s Minutes and the Treasurer’s Financial Update, followed by a brief discussion on correspondence received.

Three members are joining the Annual Council Day at Cheltenham, one as a delegate, which will take place in March.

We will also be sending a Delegate to the meeting at Liverpool Echo Arena in early June.

There will be a Weavers Group meeting taking place at St Laurence Church Hall in the Shambles on Thursday, April 6, and we will be in charge of the Trading Stall there.

I understand there will be entertainment by a Ukulele Band, so it should be a good evening.

There was a change of programme for the latter part of the evening, but we were lucky enough to welcome Mrs Pam Slater and her talk on the ‘Cotswold Perfumery’ at Bourton on the Water.

Pam brought sample bottles of the perfumes and flower waters made at the Perfumery and of course we were all keen to have a ‘squirt’ or two.

She told us all about the ingredients that go into the making of perfume, such as ambergris and musk.

She brought along a chart detailing all the different families of perfumes that are available and we were able to identify our favourites and find others of a similar variety that we would probably like.

It was a fascinating talk and Pam was a very good and clear speaker.

She tells me she is in the process of compiling another talk on ‘Pearls’ and I will be hoping to re-book her for this talk as soon as it is available.

We rounded off the evening with refreshments, the calling of the raffle and the results for the monthly competition were announced as:-

First - Mary Jarrett

Second- Tina Hewgill

Third- Margaret Adams and Mandy Sutton (joint)

Our next meeting will fall on Tuesday, March 7, to start as usual at 7.15pm at St Matthew’s Church Hall, Cainscross when we will welcome Mrs Celia Hargrave and her talk on ‘Being a Magistrate’.

The monthly competition will be for A favourite brooch.

Visitors or new members are welcome to join us and there is always a raffle, refreshments and sales table on offer.
