Stroud Valleys Music Club with Dr John Marsh

IT WAS an evening of musical enjoyment and laughter when Dr John Marsh took us through his life in music.

He started as a music student at Cambridge followed later by his return to his home city of Bristol.

Here he was Deputy Head of Music at Clifton College and Director of Music at St Mary Redcliffe.

Naturally, his choice of music included a varied range of church, choral and orchestral pieces illustrating his love of English music, such as Byrd, Vaughan Williams, Delius and Elgar.

We were also delighted to hear music written or played by himself.

But as if to underscore that music is to be enjoyed whatever its origin, we were treated also to Bach, Gershwin and Eric Coates!

John’s anecdotal introductions and musical selections proved that there is nothing better than the serious enjoyment of good music.
