Amberley School come out on top

LAST month, children from Amberley Parochial School, a small school with little more than 100 children, had a wonderful day where they came out on top of a variety of other schools not once, but twice.

Firstly, the school wildlife team had reached the Stroud area finals of the county wide wildlife and nature quiz.

The team had been practicing regularly over the previous few months, getting through preliminary and semi final rounds.

In the final, they managed to snatch a hard fought victory against Woodchester and Thrupp schools.

The team, made up of Freya Atherton, Olivia Hinch, Woody Huntley and Milo Payne, with James Sharpe and Charlie Hardaker as reserves, gave up countless lunch times to practice, supported by Granny Maureen and Claire Wilkins, both volunteers at the school.

Following this, the school 24 team also completed in a Stroud area competition with a wide range of other schools.

24 is a fast action mental-maths game, with children competing to answers questions both by themselves and as part of a team.

The Amberley team of Eliza Butt, Thomas Hall, Harry Fynn and Thomas Beauchamp were on great form in the event, answering questions quick enough to leave the adults in attendance gasping.

When the final round was over, Amberley were the winning team for the second time in a couple of hours.

As a small, community school, it is always difficult for Amberley to compete against many much larger schools.

Their achievements on Thursday, May 18 made the whole school really proud.
