Woodchester WI: A year in China

THIS month’s meeting entitled ‘A Year in China’ afforded Woodchester WI a privileged opportunity to glimpse at a China beyond the usual tourist spots.

Our speaker, Francis Bull, gave an informative and amusing talk about his day-to-day life and travels during his study year in China, affording us a rare insight into the language, geography, culture, cuisine and current affairs of this fascinating nation.

The talk prompted much discussion, and we thank our speaker for facilitating such an interesting evening.

Out and about this month two members joined a Gloucestershire Federation WI outing to Harvington Hall, Worcestershire, a beautiful moated manor house dating from 1300s that boasts the largest surviving number of priest holes in the country.

Afterwards they enjoyed a ‘retail therapy’ stop at Webbs of Wychbold.

Meanwhile, another member attended a talk entitled ‘Prehistoric Astronomy and Ritual’, an interesting consideration of current archaeological thinking in relation to the meaning of rituals, henges, the sun, moon and seasons to prehistoric people.

Closer to home both in time and place, Woodchester WI plan to salute the summer holiday season in August, with the ever-popular, traditional Fish and Chip Supper evening, followed by our annual Quiz.

New members are always welcome; next meeting Thursday, August 17, 7.30pm at Woodchester Village Hall.

If you wish to join us at this meeting please email angela.j.pryor@gmail.com so we can ensure a supper is ordered for you.
