Hundreds prepare to take part in Ride+Stride for Gloucestershire’s churches
ON SEPTEMBER 9, hundreds of people will visit many of the region’s 630+ churches on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or any other means of transport, to try and raise more than £50,000.
This annual event is the main fundraiser for the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust, which this year hopes to raise a record breaking amount.
The money raised is split between participants’ nominated churches and the Trust, which awards money in grants to Christian churches in need.
“We’ve got more churches than ever taking part and listed on our online event map,” said County Organiser Glenn Duff, “and this is a great opportunity to enjoy a fun day out exploring some of the county’s most interesting buildings.”
Anyone can take part in Ride+Stride - on foot, by bike, horse or even by car for those that are less mobile or short on time.
Supporters can visit one church or 100 - and there are prizes for the highest fundraisers.
The event map at ghct.org.uk/ride-and-stride shows which churches are offering a welcome party, to help visitors plan their day.
Last year 366 participants ranging in age from three to 80 years old visited more than 175 open churches, chapels and meeting houses, raising over £50,000.
The Trust awarded grants totalling £130,000 to 39 churches, to help with urgent repairs and maintenance, and to make improvements that will help keep these buildings alive for future generations to enjoy.
