Eastcombe WI with speaker John Putley's 'Stand and Deliver'
MARG welcomed everyone to the meeting, including two visitors, and the business followed.
Chris was thanked for organising a trip to the Royal Mint at Cardiff, which had been greatly enjoyed.
The next outings are to ‘Crazy for You’ at Bristol with France Lynch WI, and Stonor Park Christmas Fair, in November.
After noting the many events organised by the County Federation, our arrangements for the Christmas meeting were revealed and our activities for the next month.
We welcomed as our speaker Mr John Putley, who gave us an informative and very amusing insight into the history of highwaymen (and some women), ‘Stand and deliver’.
This phrase was one of the true facts about highwaymen as portrayed in literature and films.
They rarely held up coaches and their gains were small.
We were impressed by the pistol and blunderbuss which John brought along and a map of local instances was very interesting, showing Birdlip to be one of the areas nearby.
He was warmly applauded and thanked by Glenys.
