Stroud Valleys Music Club with speaker Nigel Davies
AT OUR recent meeting, the speaker – Nigel Davies - was surprised and pleased to find that one of his former music pupils was playing the ‘hi-fi’ as his DJ for the evening!
We heard how Nigel was a young boy living within earshot of the Tower Ballroom and its organ played by Reginald Dixon.
This inspired him to study music – and the organ – in Cardiff, thus starting his career in teaching.
This included Head of Music at Redland Girls School.
In retirement, he is now a local Choir Master.
Not surprisingly we were treated to a broad selection of music from his life.
After a competition to ‘spot that nursery rhyme’ in Roger Quilter’s ‘Children’s Overture’ we heard a wide range of music from Bartok to Villa Lobos, including a rattling virtuoso performance of the Sabre Dance played by Reginald Dixon on the organ at Blackpool.
It warmed us up on a cold night!
