Painswick Music Society – Schubert Ensemble

PAINSWICK Music Society’s 2018 season promises to be another memorable one with four Saturday afternoon concerts by internationally recognised artists.

The first, on March 24, is a very welcome return by the Schubert Ensemble, one of the world’s leading exponents of music for piano and strings.

It is a particularly special occasion as, after 35 years, the Schubert Ensemble have decided that this will be their last season.

In addition to touring the world, the ensemble has produced over 25 critically acclaimed CDs and has commissioned 50 new works by many of the UKs leading composers.

Their final commission is a Piano Quintet, appropriately entitled A Song of Departure by Master of the Queen’s Music Judith Weir, which will receive its second performance in Painswick following the premiere at the Wigmore Hall three days before.

The other works in the programme are Schubert’s ever popular Trout Quintet and the Piano Quartet Op 30 by Chausson, the 19th century French composer who died tragically early in a bicycle accident – it promises to be quite an afternoon.

The next concert on April 14, is by the celebrated cellist Raphael Wallfisch and his accompanist John York who have been performing together all over the world for 35 years but are making their first visit to Painswick, when their programme comprises music by Beethoven, Brahms and Miaskovsky.

The third concert on April 28, is to be given by the charismatic Heath Quartet widely recognised as one of the most exciting British chamber ensembles of our time, who will be playing works by Haydn, Tchaikovsky and the young German composer Jörg Widmann.

The final concert on May 12 is by Dame Sarah Connolly, one of the greatest mezzo sopranos of our age, accompanied by Joseph Middleton and will include a new work commissioned by Painswick Music Society by Sally Beamish entitled Day of These Days setting four poems by Laurie Lee.

Membership giving access to all four concerts and individual concert tickets, can be purchased from The Painswick Pharmacy (01452 812263), online at painswickmusicsoc.co.uk, from Dennis Morgan on 01285 821854 (pmsglen@gmail.com) or, subject to availability, at the door.

The concerts start at 3pm in St Mary’s Church, Painswick with afternoon tea available afterwards in the Church Rooms.
