Sixth formers at Marling School took the opportunity to register to vote last week, as part of Stroud District Council’s campaign to increase the number of eligible young people on the Electoral Register.

Twenty students, ranging in age from 16 to 18, registered online with the council’s election officers.

Louise Harris, Assistant Head of Marling School 6th form, said: “We were very pleased to be asked by Stroud District Council to host this event.

“It is extremely important that young people exercise their right to vote and, for many, this will be their first experience of local democracy.”

Not only will they be eligible to vote in future elections; it will improve their credit rating meaning that it will be easier for them to take out a mobile phone contract or loan.

Harriet Davis, Stroud District Council Elections Officer, said: “The sign-up at Marling School was part of National Democracy Week which will be celebrated at Stroud Museum in the Park with a Garden Party, on Sunday, July 1.

“Celebrating 90 years since The Equal Franchise Right 1928, which gave women and men equal voting rights, the garden party will have family-friendly activities and workshops for all ages organised by the SDC Elections Team from 11am to 4pm. Visitors can make bunting, banners and rosettes, join discussions over tea and cake, meet local councillors, and register to vote if necessary.”
