Woodchester WI with Celia Hargrave

THE members of Woodchester WI do not make a habit of coming up in front of the local magistrate.

However, in June we all did when Celia Hargrave came to speak to us about her life as a magistrate, and how fortunate we were.

Following a brief history of the magistrate, Celia spoke to us about the responsibilities, now both men and women, undertake.

We were all impressed by the compassion, wisdom and absence of prejudice that appeared to be at the core of a magistrate’s role, and were reminded how privileged we are to live in a country with a justice system such as ours.

We have also been out and about this month, visiting Rodmarton Manor, a local English Arts and Crafts Movement gem.

We were treated to a guided tour of the house, and after a delightful stroll through the gardens we rounded up our trip in true WI style – with tea and cake.

There is no letting up of activities during July; our Book Group meets to discuss Ian McEwan’s ‘Nutshell’.

Our Craft Group afternoons will continue throughout summer, meeting on the first Thursday of each month (2-4pm) at Woodchester Village Hall.

Our next WI meeting is on Thursday, July 19, 7.30pm, at Woodchester Village Hall, when we welcome Stephen Rowley who will present ‘Bells and Spangles – A History of Morris Dancing in Gloucestershire’.

Visitors and new members are always welcome.

Please email Angela (angela.j.pryor@gmail.com) if you would like further details.

We hope to see you soon.
