OUR July meeting was somewhat different from normal as we met at noon for a very enjoyable Ploughman’s Lunch prepared by a small group of members.

Unfortunately rather a lot sent their apologies, a combination of holidays and illness meant that only 19 of us were there.

It was a very hot day, and the menu was perfect – cheese/egg/ham plus salad, followed by strawberries with meringue and cream.

There was a short interval in which members could look at the favourite summer pudding recipes which had been suggested, or buy from the stall or simply have a chat.

Then it was time for a small amount of business, mainly dates for the diary.

The Macmillan coffee morning this year will be on September 29 and the WI will be helping run stalls and serve refreshments.

The next Film Club morning will be on Saturday, July 21 at 10.30am.

On August 15, members are invited to a garden meeting at Kingston House from 2pm - 4pm for tea, croquet and bowls (Whist or Scrabble if wet).

Our September meeting will be on the 10th at 2.15pm when Robert and Jill will share their experiences of sailing between St Petersburg and Moscow and there will be a display of members’ favourite holiday photos.

A little light entertainment followed.

First an email which pointed out the advantages of being 60 (or even 70 or 80!).

How about ‘Whatever you buy now won’t wear out’ or ‘Kidnappers are not very interested in you any more’.

It helps take the mind off any aches and pains!

We then had a short general knowledge quiz, and while we all enjoyed a welcome cup of tea, members wracked their brains over anagrams of holiday resorts.

The deathly hush in the room made it seem like a GCSE exam.

The team who provided the lunch were very warmly thanked, and because so many willing hands joined in, the washing up and the putting away of tables and chairs was done in record time – despite the temperature outside reaching 28C.
