A CAMPAIGN is underway to introduce a 20mph limit on a busy road between Stroud and Stonehouse.

County Labour leader Lesley Williams, who represents the Stonehouse ward, wants the limit imposed along Westward Road in Cainscross because of safety concerns.

Residents say it is used as a rat run with speeding motorists making it dangerous to cross during rush hour.

They fear that someone will be hurt unless action is taken.

There are also complaints that vehicles are being parked on pavements which means that pedestrians, including the elderly, those with disabilities and parents with pushchairs, are forced to walk in the road.

Cllr Williams is calling on Gloucestershire County Council to take action.

“At busy periods pedestrians really do struggle to cross this stretch of road,” said Cllr Williams.

“That is why I am calling on the county council to introduce a 20mph speed limit, which should encourage drivers to slow down.

“I am also calling on the council to remark the double yellow lines on the road.

“Too many drivers are parking their vehicles on the pavement forcing pedestrians into the busy road.”

Among the residents backing the campaign is Maureen Rutter, who lives in Westward Road.

“The situation is becoming a bit of a nightmare,” she said.

“Motorists need to slow down and they need to stop parking their vehicles on the pavement. Someone is going to get hurt if drivers do not slow down.

“Introducing a 20mph limit would hopefully remind drivers to slow down and new yellow lines would help prevent people from illegally parking on the pavements.”

Commenting on the campaign, local highways manager Daniel Tiffney of Gloucestershire County Council, said: “We will be resurfacing Westward Road in Cainscross in December which will include a full repaint of the double yellow lines.

“In addition, we are happy to talk to Lesley about the speed limit in the area and whether a public consultation could be carried out.

“Lesley could also talk to us about including this proposal in her highways local
