A PETITION calling for a pedestrian crossing on the busy London Road near Bristol Street motors has attracted hundreds of signatures.

The campaign for a crossing was launched by Sue Collins, who has worked as an administrator at Bristol Street Motors in London Road for 24 years.

Mrs Collins has been petitioning for a zebra crossing to be fitted outside the car garage for more than five years, but feels now is the time to take serious action.

“I would rather see a crossing put in as a preventative measure, rather than waiting for someone to be killed before action is taken,” said Mrs Collins.

“The road is so busy it can sometimes take me 10 minutes waiting in the dark to cross the road to my car after work.

“It is just so, so dangerous and I just think someone is going to get hurt if not killed.”

Over the last few months, names have been collected by customers and local residents who have visited the garage, which is on the petrol forecourt, to sign the petition.

There is already a crossing at both the Waitrose end of London Road and one near the Brimscombe junction, however, Mrs Collins feels one is needed near the car garage to help pedestrians cross the 40mph stretch of road safely.

“On a daily basis I see mothers with pushchairs attempting to cross the road and every morning children on their way to school risk trying to make it safely across,” she added.

“Something needs to be done sooner rather than later and I am hoping the highways agency takes our petition seriously and does something as quickly as possible.

“We have more than nine pages of A4 paper filled with signatures and we have people calling the garage asking for their name to be added.

“There is a lot of community support for this crossing.”

Dan Tiffney, local highways manager at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “We haven’t received a petition relating to a pedestrian crossing in London Road but if we do, we will look at it in detail and consider the need for it.”
