STROUD’S main swimming pool was closed on Monday evening after part of a suspended ceiling fell away at Stratford Park Leisure Centre.

Luckily no-one was hurt although safety checks are now taking place on the whole ceiling, meaning the pool is expected to remain shut until confirmed safe.

A spokesman for Stroud District Council, the leisure centres owners said: “‘A section of the suspended ceiling above the pool came away and fell on to poolside late on Monday afternoon.

“We have had to close it to carry out checks and make repairs. The pool will be reopened once we are completely satisfied that the whole ceiling is secure and safe.

“We obviously hope to do this as soon as possible in order to minimise disruption and apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers.

“We hope that they will bear with us and understand the need for this temporary closure.”

The centre is run by Everyone Active who has confirmed that while the pool remains closed, members can swim at any other of its centres.
