DO you have a close friend, family member or partner who is suffering from an addiction or substance misuse? Do you feel alone and that there is no one to talk to?

The Nelson Trust, a local charity based in Gloucestershire, can provide support to families and carers with their weekend which is designed specifically for one or two members of the family, or close friends, affected by substance misuse.

These weekends do not include the individual who has been affected by their own substance misuse/addiction but is for those who have been affected by that person.

Often people may feel alone and isolated and feel they have no one to talk to. Addiction and substance misuse does not only affect the individual themselves but also their relationships with those they are closest to.

This weekend provides a safe environment for friends and family to open up and share their experiences and feelings.

The weekend includes workshops and practical strategies for managing communication with a substance misuser.

Meeting others in similar situations has shown itself to be immensely helpful and in some circumstances, appears to be beneficial in helping family members motivate their loved one into treatment or to abstain for substance misuse.

One family who attended the last weekend in November 2014 told us: "We were particularly pleased and impressed with the sensitive and caring approach adopted by the course leader, Di, and the way in which she helped everyone to see how the general guidelines could be applied to their circumstances".

The next carers weekend is Saturday, February 21 to Sunday, February 22 in Gloucester.

Lunch and refreshments are provided. The weekend is FREE to those with a Gloucestershire address.
