THE Gloucestershire RoSPA Advanced Riders and Driver group have written a number of helpful tips for keen motorcyclists to celebrate the start of the new season.

Here are some tips.

Read the manual first and see what needs to be done to your bike. The BIG TIP is to remember the acronym P.O.W.D.D.E.R.S.

It stands for Petrol Oil Water Damage Drive Electrics Rubber Steering

Petrol. Check you have a full tank. Petrol generates condensation in a partly filled tank which could damage your engine after a winter in a cold garage.

• Oil. Check the oil level. Remember over-filling is worse than letting the level drop below the minimum mark.

Water. If you have a water-cooled engine check the level of the coolant with the bike vertical. Top up with a mix of distilled water and antifreeze to prevent winter freezing and summer overheating.

Damage. Check bike for damage to fairings, light lenses, brake and coolant hoses, frame cracks, missing fairing bolts, wheel rim dents, loose brake caliper bolts and frayed or broken wires.

Drive. Check chain for accumulated dirt and debris. Lubricate, adjust tension, check sprockets. Check shaft drive and rubber joint gaiters for splits and leaks.

• Electrics. Check all lights, dials and horn.

• Rubber. Check tyre pressures and valve. Check tread depth (legal minimum 1.0mm but we suggest at least 1.5mm). Check tyre walls for cracks caused by age or extended storage.

• Steering & Suspension. Check for excessive play in the levers, steering or shock absorbers. Check for fork seal leaks.

Finally: Remember the rider! Ensure your riding gear is in good condition. Check helmet for damage. If accidentally dropped or if it falls off your seat then don’t wear it until you have it examined by a specialist.
