Gloucestershire Police are urging the public to be extra vigilant following a spate of thefts from motor vehicles recently.

Gloucester, in particular, has experienced a number of offences of theft from cars across the city including Innsworth, Hucclecote, Brockworth and Quedgeley.

Many of these offences have happened overnight, often in unsecured cars.

Dave McFarlane, Senior Harm Reduction Advisor at Gloucestershire Police said:“Let’s try and reduce the number of car break-ins by ensuring that we don’t make it easy for criminals to damage cars and steal personal belongings."

Police have issued the following precautions:

• Lock vehicle doors and windows at all times and ensure during hot weather that windows and sun roofs are fully closed when parked.

• Remove all valuables from vehicles such as cash, bank cards, sunglasses, keys and mobile phones when parked, especially on the street or on driveways. If you have to leave them in the vehicle, make sure they are out of sight in a locked boot.

• When possible try to park in a conspicuous place or, if at night, close to bright street lights.

• Remember to remove Satnav equipment and even the sticky impression left where a Satnav has been– these things are a give-away for car thieves."

The community are urged to report any suspicious activity on 999 if they see a crime in progress or suspect one.
